For a fisherman, just hearing the name of Queensland, Australia makes
the heart race a bit thinking of all the angling possibilities the area
affords; everything from freshwater, brackish water and saltwater
fishing with species ranging from Australia bass to tarpon. Those who
often fish in Queensland know that one of the most sought after, largest
and best fighting sport fish is the Barramundi.
The Barramundi puts up a fight like few other sport fish and have been
reported weighing in at a trophy size of around 33kg. That’s not a fish
you land in a couple of minutes, but it’s certainly one you remember for
years.
Good Barramundi Fishing Locations in North Queensland (QLD)
Barramundi fishing is good at Hinchinbrook Queensland, Australia,
especially in the rivers and creeks in the Hinchinbrook Channel in North
Queensland. Not only is the fishing great but you will have the luxury
of viewing the scenic coastline with the backdrop of Hinchinbrook
Island, the world's largest oceanic Island National Park with its
beautiful rugged mountain peaks, waterfalls and rainforest. If you are
seeking a trophy Barramundi, this would be a great place to go.
Cardwell is another great fishing location to look into in North
Queensland, and In North Eastern QLD Lake Tinaroo is hot. It’s stocked
with fingerling. It’s about an hour’s drive west of Cairns, and commonly
boasts Barras over sixty pounds.
Good Barramundi Fishing Locations in Eastern Queensland
On the East Coast of Australia approximately 30km from Gladstone on
the Capricorn Coast, Lake Awoonga is another good prospect for
Barramundi. Lake Awoonga provides good fishing for Barramundi (as well
as other fish) all year round. This lake is stocked with Barramundi by
the Gladstone Area Water Board who breeds them especially for that
purpose, so this makes Lake Awoonga a fishermen’s paradise when it comes
to Barras.
Good Barramundi Fishing Locations in Central Queensland
In Central Queensland you will find Lake Proserpine, which is
actually about 26 kilometres inland from Proserpine. This lake is also
called Peter Faust Dam. Proserpine is not very far from Airlie Beach and
Shute Harbour which is the access to the renowned Whitsunday Islands and
The Great Barrier Reef. Some of the largest Barramundi can be found in
impoundment's of Lake Proserpine in Queensland, making it the perfect
sport fishing destination.
Good Barramundi Fishing Locations in Southeast Queensland
Also famous for Barramundi fishing is Lake Monduran, or the Fred
Haigh Dam. It is located in far South East Queensland and there are
plenty of Barras to go around. It’s not uncommon for them to be landed
weighing in at over 1 metre in length. |
